Hallowe'en Cupcakes

As promised...here come the pictures of the cupcakes

Monster Muncher, with Pillsbury's funfetti frosting, licorice buttons as eyes, cherry jelly bean as the nose and peel-off Twizzlers as the antennae.

Icing ghosts stand in an unkempt patch of grass (yes, that's grass not green worms!)

The tray of monsters and ghosts

The party table at school! Everyone loved the mice and the cupcakes!

I made some more green patches of grass with red twizzlers for the get-together in the evening.

This is the first time I have ever held a frosting bag in my hands. It was a ton of fun! None of this would have been possible without Archana's thoughtful and careful guidance! Archana, the kids at school and all of us thank you a whole bunch!

I am not trying to dust you with sugar, but you did a super awesome job ! Your piping is so consistent and even. I am so impressed by the colors you have chosen, and the decorations and pipings that you have matched. Thank you for mentioning me, you are always such a sweet girl, but these cakes are all yours, your design and creativity. I am sure Medha was all proud and happy about her mother's cakes. Excellent !!

The lil beasts are a feast to the eyes and the tummy too I'm sure. You sure have a flair with the frosting bag if your very first time creates such beautiful pieces !! Looking forward for more :-)

Shankari, I am mighty thrilled with myself, too! To tell you the truth though, I found this very therapeutic. There was a great sense of calm that I got from this activity. I had my setbacks: couplers flying off the bags, frosting slipping out from the open end of the bag because I hadn't twisted it well or I wasn't holding it properly...But it was fun! Since these were mini cupcakes, I have at least another 40 more as my backup. So if things had failed, I would have just slathered frosting on the backup cupcakes, thrown some Hallowe'en sprinkles on them, and stuck the ghosts and the pumpkin toothpicks in. I think these went off well because I was not attached to the results.

RP, I'm raring to do more! Medha wants to try her hand at it and we may just do that on an upcoming weekend. I've also saved some cookie dough for her and her friend to make mice out of. So that should be a lot of fun!

Archana, if it's sugar, I'll take all the dusting you can give! I'm quite thrilled with it, and I am even more thrilled that you like them! I do have to admit that I had no clue what I was doing. I'm not that creative though. I got the idea for the monster and the grass from the baking & decorating web site you recommended.

Priya, if you noticed I chose designs that don't require much perfection! And there was a reason for that! It's amazing though how things like this can make so much of a difference to kids. It helps make the moment special for them and they cherish it when they are older.

Meena, they sure did have a blast! It was time consuming - it took me 1.5 hours to do all those cupcakes, especially with all the mishaps along the way. Also, my cupcakes looked nothing like what the pictures showed but I went with it in any case! My husband actually helped me with a couple of the cupcakes with grass because I was running out of time. I should have taken a picture of that!

SH, I am sure I made a lot of mistakes but since I didn't know any better and the designs were such that it wasn't obvious, I just kept going! Luckily for me, when the couplers flew off or the frosting slipped out, they landed on the tray I was using. Phew! The kids were really quite happy!

Vani, thanks and it is very much my first time! Medha wanted me to use the frosting bags and nozzles to do mehndi (henna) on her hands this weekend. No way! Those nozzles are far too precious!

Anita, I wish I had far too much time on my hands. I would use it to sleep sleep sleep! I baked the cupcakes till midnight and the mice after that. To translate literally: it's a case of "what what we do for our children!" :-D DST switched to ST before Hallowe'en so I made sure I got my extra hour of sleep! The sun sets behind the mountains a little after 4:30 even thought he official sunset time is just before 5pm. It's a strange sight cos you can see the cities to the east still get sunlight! I was looking at the list of visitors I am going to have through November and then December and my only question to my husband was: when will we go on a vacation? I so need one!

Krithika, thanks! Try it out. My standard matra: if I can, anyone can!

i love the cupcakes, but i want the cupcake carrier...where did you find that? it's perfect....

Sumrina, I indulged myself and bought the caddy at Michael's for $19.99. It's available online at Wilton's and can carry 24 mini-cupcakes, flip it over and it will carry 12 regular size cupcakes. Take away this carrier sheet and you can carry a large cake. Just yesterday I saw an ad for a Bake & Carry Caddy for $29.99 at BBB. It includes a 24 mini-muffin pan as well as a 12 muffin pan. I couldn't find this one online at Wilton's. Hope this helps!

Nidhi, it was a fun exercise for me! I think everyone should try it out at least once! It was definitely easier than making jalebis!!

foodiemama, thanks! And I hope you are feeling better! Make sure you're getting lots of Vitamin D, i.e. the sun!

Anupama, try the mice! I am sure your son will love them! They are a little time consuming but you can get him to help - he'll have fun, too! It's like playing with clay or play-doh!

Mantu, thanks! I still have some frosting left so I might try some more stunts this weekend! Give it a try - it's very therapeutic!

AP, go on then! Gobble gobble! But remember, once you've eaten these you remain a witch forever! Can't become a Muggle again!

Shaheen, thanks! They tasted really good!

Shankari, you can run your pages through Copyscape or through Google looking for specific phrases. Enclose your search phrase in quotes so that it matches exactly. Other than that, you rely on friends and readers to alert you. Pictures, there really is not much you can do except if you come across it yourself or a friend or reader finds your picture on another site and you can prove it is your own. There's only so much policing you can do. For the most part, it's not worth the effort. Your best bet is to raise awareness and hope it stops. People get very nasty when they are told they are doing something wrong. They even level abuses at you via anonymous comments and emails. How can emails be anonymous? Well, unsigned emails sent from free email accounts.

Asha, coming from you and the wonders you made for Halowe'en, that's a huge compliment!! Thank you!

Radhika, thanks and welcome! The cupcakes were from a box - I think it was the Pillsbury's Supreme Moist Classic White. And, I bought Wilton's 25 piece decorating set from Michael's. The cupcake decorating site said to use the pullout star #18 but my set had #16 so I used that instead. You'll see that my cupcakes don't look anything like the beautiful ones on that site but the kids loved what I was able to do. So that was very gratifying!! Hope this helps! And, let me know if you tried your hand at icing and how it went!

Hi Mansiha, just checking in to see if everything's ok. Haven't seen a new post on your blog for a long time...

Anjali, thank you! That is very sweet of you! I love your blog and I am drooling over your Galtarcha Sarga. I will have to wait to visit India before I can try it but I can dream, can't I? I can imagine just how fantastic the real thing tastes!

Sree, thanks! It was a great deal of fun!!

Nabeela, all is well or rather all is just too busy. Besides being busy at work, I suddenly have to drive Medha to a zillion places during the week! And, I am going to have a t least 2 (if not 3) sets of visitors from the 19th through to the 27th. We are so far away from family that friends become our family and the timing is perfect: Thanksgiving! I doubt know I will have any time to post for the next 2-3 weeks. Thank you for thinking of me!

Dear Ms.Manisha,
It has been brought to our attention that you have not updated your blog since Halloween. Why, that's a misdemeanor and will not be tolerated. You are therefore summoned to make an appearance in blogspot ASAP.

Any intentions of neglecting the above note will have serious consequences.

Sincerely,
Mythili & Friends.

Anjali, you are most welcome!

Pushpa, Spandana and Linda, thank you very much!

Mythili, you scared me so much that I put everything aside and quickly posted lest I be accused of further misdemeanors! I certainly did not want to find out what the serious consequences might be! :-D

I was just very busy, at work and with visitors. It's going to be pretty much the same story for the rest of the year!
